Quick Holiday Shopping Tips

Craig Peterson: [00:00:00] This morning I spent a few minutes with Jack Heath doing a quick overview of online shopping. What are some of the best sites out there? We talked about a couple, and of course the standard tips. There is a new one out there. Beware of online shopping sites including Pandora. It’s amazing what the bad guys have been able to accomplish. You’d think they’d be able to take those talents in and maybe make some money legitimately. I don’t get it. But you know maybe that’s just me.

Jack Heath: [00:00:30] Right now we bring in our Tech Talk guy Craig Peterson on the Auto Fair listener lines. And Craig, busy shopping period online even though it’s called the Black Friday online as well and of course cyber Monday.

Craig: [00:00:42] Yeah it’s a big year this year. Let me tell you, people are going online and we expect a lot of shopping especially with the economy up. And we’ve got a few tips and tricks here for people as well Jack.

Jack: [00:00:55] Take it away.

Craig: [00:00:56] Alright. Now number one tip is always be safe, right? We say this every year. Be careful. There are fraudsters that make websites. Pandora is an example. They will go so far as to make a site that looks exactly like Pandora. Send you an e-mail saying hey there’s savings to be had. People click on the e-mail. They think they’re shopping at Pandora but nothing ever arrives. So be very careful again about that sort of thing. But here’s a couple of really good tips you might not know about. One is a plug in that I have been using for probably about two years now. It’s called Honey. You can find it online at http://joinhoney.com. H-O-N-E-Y, http://joinhoney.com. You can add it to your Chrome browser. It’s absolutely free. But when you are in the checkout page trying to check how it with your shopping cart, Honey has discount coupons and Honey will find the best discount coupon for you for that site. It works with the big guys like http://Amazon.com, all the way on down through a lot of the smaller retailers. And I can tell you Jack, it is saved me quite a bit of money. Now there’s another one too, and I had the CEO of this company on my radio show, it’s called Wallet Hub. W-A-L-L-E-T-H-U-B, just like it sounds, http://wallethub.com. And they keep an eye out for the hottest Black Friday and Cyber Monday ad leaks. So Wallet Hub will tell you in advance what places like Dell, Wal-Mart, Target, Kohl’s, J.C. Penney, Sears. The list goes on and on. Best Buy, Macy’s. It’ll tell you in advance what the sales will be.

Jack: [00:02:49] Ah, kind of like a little fortune telling.

Craig: [00:02:51] It is. It is. And they’re keeping an eye out because sometimes a small paper might release a Black Friday ad they weren’t supposed to release yet. So http://wallethub.com. I’ve saved money with that as well. But overall, be safe out there. Check out Wallet Hub, check out http://joinhoney.com. Put it in your Chrome browser. And you know, just make it a safe holiday shopping season. And just be careful. Be cautious. Go to web sites. Don’t click on links that are coming in your e-mails.

Jack: [00:03:23] David.

David Losh: [00:03:24] Now Craig, one of my questions on that too is a lot of these newer web browsers, you have Chrome, Firefox, all of them that are out there. They have the ability to save your credit card information. Do you strongly advise against that because of the nature of hacking nowadays?

Craig: [00:03:37] Yeah. You know, it’s a real problem. And here’s the bottom line. If your machine gets hacked, some of these browsers like Chrome, etcetera, are keeping your passwords. Obviously in a way that they can restore them to and feed them out to the websites. Same thing is true when they’re storing things like your credit card information. So do not allow your browser remember that. And a good point too now, if you have an Apple iPhone you have Apple Pay, which is the safest way to pay for anything in person or now online. Apple Pay ties into a lot of these websites so it makes it easy and makes it very secure. The retailer never gets your credit card number. I love what Apple Pay does. Samsung has Samsung Pay but you know what I think about Android devices. And don’t let these browsers keep your credit card information to make your life a little easier because ultimately it could cost you hundreds of hours trying to get back your good credit rating.

Jack: [00:04:42] All right great stuff this morning. Thank you Craig Peterson. His show, of course, airs on the weekends. What is it at 11 to noon?

Craig: [00:04:50] 11 till noon every Saturday.

Jack: [00:04:51] On iHeart News talk stations. Thank you Craig.

Craig: [00:04:53] Take care.
